Keeping NSW Government's Largest Facility Powered and Protected
Our partnership with the Sydney Academy of Sport demonstrates Protex’s ability to deliver comprehensive planned preventative and reactive electrical maintenance across one of the NSW Government’s most diverse and operationally demanding sites.
Project spotlight
Sydney Academy of Sport
The Sydney Academy of Sport is the NSW Government’s largest sports and recreation precinct, spanning multiple buildings and accommodating thousands of visitors each year. The scope of the site is extensive, incorporating:
- Accommodation for over 300 people across multiple lodging buildings
- A motel facility supporting 150+ guests
- Commercial kitchens serving large groups and sports teams
- A heated indoor pool
- Synthetic outdoor multi-purpose courts with lighting
- Four multi-purpose ovals with professional-grade lighting
- A multi-purpose indoor sports gymnasium
- Extensive office and administration spaces
- Numerous training, function, and recreation rooms
With such a wide range of facilities — each with critical electrical dependencies — reliability is essential. Protex provides a complete electrical maintenance program tailored to the Academy’s operational demands, combining planned preventative maintenance and rapid-response reactive support. To support the site effectively, Protex assigns dedicated technicians who are trained to understand the layout, systems, and infrastructure intricately. Their familiarity with the site means issues are diagnosed quickly and resolved efficiently, minimising downtime and ensuring continuity across all sporting, accommodation, and operational areas.
Establishing a Clear Asset Baseline
Comprehensive Site Audit & Asset Validation
At the commencement of our engagement, Protex conducted a full electrical asset review across the entire precinct. This included validating existing registers, identifying undocumented equipment, and recording gaps in infrastructure. Due to incomplete or inaccurate electrical board information, our technicians needed to verify each asset, create accurate listings, and ensure records reflected the actual conditions on site. Every asset was then logged into our job management system, assigned a unique asset number and barcode, and documented with images, precise locations, and descriptions — ensuring a clear and reliable foundation for maintenance planning.
Responding When It Matters Most
Structured Monthly, Bi-Monthly, Quarterly & Annual Testing
The Academy requires a customised and comprehensive preventative maintenance program, including monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and annual servicing across all buildings and outdoor facilities.
Monthly & Bi-Monthly Maintenance
Monthly maintenance includes visual inspections of switchboards, electrical panels, lighting, controls, and critical equipment, along with essential cleaning and safety checks. Bi-monthly servicing targets specific assets identified during initial reviews or previous visits, ensuring developing issues are addressed early and efficiently.
Quarterly & Half-Yearly Maintenance
Every quarter, Protex performs detailed maintenance on facility-wide assets such as hot water systems, exhaust fans, ceiling fans, hand dryers, and key electrical components across lodging, sports facilities, commercial kitchens, pool areas, and outdoor courts. Half-yearly servicing includes deeper inspections of distribution boards, comprehensive RCD and circuit protection testing, and maintenance of ageing or high-risk infrastructure that supports the Academy’s diverse operations.
Annual Maintenance
The annual maintenance program encompasses site-wide compliance testing, including thermographic scanning, insulation resistance tests, verification of electrical panels and switchboards, and detailed asset validation to ensure nothing is overlooked. This full-scale annual review supports long-term reliability, compliance with Australian Standards and WHS legislation, and optimal performance across every building, field, and facility.
Complete Visibility & Compliance
Maintenance Reporting, Documentation & Asset Tracking
All maintenance activities — from routine inspections to corrective repairs — are logged against each asset in our system, giving the Academy complete transparency of its electrical infrastructure. These systems ensure the entire precinct remains safe, compliant, and well-prepared for the high volume of visitors, athletes, staff, and programs that rely on its facilities year-round. After every visit, we provide:
- A detailed maintenance report covering inspections, tests, repairs, and compliance notes
- Updates to asset registers and fault histories
- Quotes for remedial works before proceeding
- Reviewed and updated schematics and electrical schedules
