Leading Hand Electrician Application Form

About You

Why Join Protex Electrical

Hear from our team

What You'll Be Doing

Lead from the front. Stay on the Tools.
This isn’t a Leading Hand role where you’ll spend your days standing around with a clipboard or behind a computer.

It’s a working Leading Hand role, where you’ll lead a small crew (1-4 guys) while remaining hands on throughout every project. You’ll plan the work, solve problems, mentor your team and make sure every job is delivered to the high standard Protex is known for.

Lead Short, Fast Moving Projects.
Forget spending years on the same construction site. Our projects typically run anywhere from one day to four weeks, giving you the opportunity to lead a wide variety of jobs while seeing the results of your work quickly. You’ll coordinate labour, materials, subcontractors and client communication, while still staying on the tools alongside your team.

Your projects will include:

– EV charging infrastructure for pubs, clubs, commercial fleets and apartment buildings

– Shop fit outs or refurbishments

– Small commercial and high-end residential renovations

– Commercial and residential service, maintenance, fault finding and troubleshooting

– Lighting, power and switchboard upgrades

Variety when you’re not leading projects
When you’re not running a project, you’ll jump back into what you do best, service work.

You’ll work independently across varied service calls for our commercial, facilities and property-management clients.

Build great electricians.
One of the most rewarding parts of this role is helping others develop.

You’ll lead a small crew of electricians, apprentices and trade assistants, sharing your knowledge, setting the standard and helping the next generation of sparkies grow into great tradespeople.

FAQs

What are your standard work hours?

We work a four day week so you do 4 longer days, 7am-5pm. You will then either have Friday or Monday off. All of the technicians rotate quarterly so that they have a mix of Fridays and Mondays off throughout the year.

What areas will I be working in?

Most of our work is across Sydney, including the North Shore, Northern Beaches, CBD, Eastern Suburbs and Inner West. We aim to plan jobs efficiently so you’re spending your time on the tools not sitting in traffic.

Do I get a company vehicle?

Yes! All our technicians have brand new Renault vans which are fully kitted out with everything you need to get the job done. We also cover fuel, tolls and servicing.

What does a typical day look like?

You start the morning by grabbing a coffee, checking the day’s schedule in simPRO and meeting with the small crew you’ll be leading. Today, you’re heading to an apartment building where Protex is delivering
an EV charging infrastructure project. Before leaving the warehouse, you make sure the materials and
equipment are loaded and everyone understands the plan for the day.

Once onsite, you run through the work with the team, allocate tasks and get everyone moving safely and efficiently. This is a working Leading Hand role, so you’re not standing around directing traffic,  you’re on
the tools alongside the crew, installing equipment, checking the quality of the work and helping solve any issues that come up.

As the project progresses, you keep an eye on the bigger picture. You coordinate with the client, plan ahead for upcoming stages and make sure the right labour and materials will be available when needed.

If an unexpected site condition or access issue comes up, you assess the situation, adjust the plan and
keep the office and client informed so the project stays on track.

Throughout the day, you support the electricians, apprentices and trade assistants working with you,
answering questions, sharing your experience and making sure everyone understands the standard
expected.

At the end of the day, you check the team’s work, confirm what needs to happen next and update the
client on progress.

You upload your job notes, photos and testing information into simPRO, organise any
materials required for the next stage and check in with the office before heading home.

You finish the day knowing you’ve led from the front, helped develop the people around you and
delivered quality work for the client. After four focused working days, your three-day weekend begins.
If you’re the kind of electrician who enjoys leading people, solving problems, staying on the tools and
taking genuine ownership of your work, you’ll feel right at home here.

The following week might look completely different. When you’re not leading a project, you could be
working independently across a mix of service calls – fault-finding at a commercial facility, completing a
lighting or switchboard upgrade, or resolving an urgent maintenance issue for one of our property
management clients.

Will I still be on the tools?

Absolutely. This is a working Leading Hand role. You’ll lead a small crew while remaining hands-on throughout every project. You’ll coordinate the job, mentor the team and manage client communication, but you’ll still be on the tools alongside your crew every day.

What type of projects will I be running?

Forget spending years on the same construction site. Our projects are short, varied and hands-on. One week you might be leading an EV charging installation at an apartment building, the next completing a commercial fit out, switchboard upgrade or lighting project. It keeps the work interesting and gives you the satisfaction of seeing projects through from start to finish. Our main clients are facilities, real estate, commercial, government and strata.

What experience do I need to have?

You’ll have at least 5 years of post-trade experience and naturally enjoy leading others. Whether you’ve been running projects for a large contractor or leading a small crew, we’re looking for someone who takes ownership, leads by example and enjoys helping others do their best work.

Will I have to do emergency work?

Yes, we have a rotating emergency roster where you are on call around every 5 weeks. This involves you being available after hours Monday – Sunday for that week. You will be a paid a standby fee of $50 and if an emergency job comes in you will be given a minimum call out of 4 hours, you will be paid for additional hours above that. While you are on call you are expected to have your vehicle and uniform with you and be sober.

In the event that an emergency request comes in, the call will go through to the supervisor and they will screen the call to see if an attendance is required. If required, the supervisor will call you to advise the address, contact details, and nature of the emergency.

What systems do you use?

We use simPRO for our job management system which houses everything you need for every job. Through the app you can access your schedule, see the job description, add job notes and photos and videos, add materials and add quoted work notes. We give you comprehensive training so that you are comfortable with the system.

What does the onboarding process look like?

We have a comprehensive onboarding process so that you feel completely comfortable when you attend your first job solo. Day 1 will be in the office with our Director Cam who will be taking you through our company values, systems and processes, leave request, sick leave, uniform etc. Basically all the backend admin things will be completed that day. You will also get your vehicle handed over. You will then be buddied up with a senior technician for the next two weeks who will show you the ropes. You will shadow them for the two weeks learning how simPRO works, how we manage jobs, our processes and procedures. You will then be sent out to your own jobs on week three with an open line to your training buddy at all times to aswer any questions you have. You will then get buddied up with your training buddy as and when you need it.

Who is in your team?
  • We have two directors at Protex, John and Cam. Cam manages all the backend operations for the business and the sales to new customers. John is an electrician by trade and is our Field General. He is the point of call for all our technicians, running daily morning calls to set you up for the days work, answering questions, helping with technical questions, assisting on challenging jobs, keeping a high quality of work throughout our business.
  • Amy is the General Manager and manages the recruitment, marketing and strategy for the business.
  • Demi is the Service Coordinator and manages all the scheduling and material ordering, you will work very closely with her.
  • Sean is our Quoting and Billing Officer and creates all the quotes for new works and invoices for completed works. You will work closely with him on jobs when you have questions about scope of work or when he has questions about works completed.
  • Our Accounting officer Rach works remotely in the Phillipines.
  • We then have a mix of 5 technicians in both Electrical and A/C.
